![]() Same with Only a Monster by Vanessa Len.ĮTL done badly where I felt completely baited was Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen - both their hate and their love just "existed" without actual proper development. Renegades by Marissa Meyer is usually also advertised as ETL, but I haven't read it to confirm / deny. So it's not the case "oh we're enemies but I never did anything against him".Įxcept The Folk of The Air, Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin is usually advertised as ETL, even though I had big issue with fmc constantly sexualizing people in her internal monologue. But fmc doesn't swoon over mmc when she sees him and at some point she actually throws him out of the window. It's enemies to reluctant allies to love, but it doesn't go beyond kissing and it's very slow burn (they don't kiss until 400 pages in). I'd say Little Thieves by Margaret Owen scratched my itch for ETL / slow burn. Even though I was more frustrated with piles of YA books with unrealistic insta-love for no reason (and ETL kinda works good in tandem with slow burn). I got so frustrated that I decided to write it myself I do know I am tired of investing my time and money into books beings sold as one thing when they are actually the opposite! Or they are afraid the readers won't think the people who have done bad things deserve to fall in love by the end. I think most writers struggle with writing enemies to lovers because they are impatient to see them get together. I'd be thinking, how to I get rid of this jerk? If I hate someone - I mean really hate them - I don't feel immediate sexual attraction! I might admit they are objectively good looking but I won't constantly check their strong muscular arms and chiselled cheekbones. My pet peeve in so called E2L books is when characters are supposedly enemies but they are hyper-aware of each other's broad chests, sexy smirks, and so on. ![]() And while the characters start on two opposing sides of the conflict, there is no real animosity between them and they work together from a get go. I often see Legend by Marie Lu recommended as enemies to lovers. There's a bit of that slow-burn tension in Legendborn and Bloodmarked which I enjoyed a lot, but the series is not over yet and it could go either way, so who knows? Even when they are supposedly on the same team and it becomes clear they are attracted to each other, it's not just smooth sailing from the first kiss. The overcoming of differences and a slow-burn trust-building between Jude and Cardan takes three books. I got so frustrated that I decided to write it myself □ It will take me a few years to complete, though - watch this space lol □Īs for the published books that exist outside of my imagination, the closest I got to that feeling is with Folk of the Air series, which I reread like 8 times now. I've been looking for a book with well done E2L for a very long time, and there are only a handful that come close to what I consider real enemies to lovers. What have you read so far that you liked?
